Getting The Chimney Breast Ready....

Before I get on with the reveal of the finished family room, I thought I'd show you a little bit behind the scenes, in the spirit of keeping it real!! There was a lot of dust and grime to get through before we got to the stage where we could think about putting our own stamp on this room. My plans of a Modern Country Style interior had to be put on hold...

I think we left the family room right about here:

We'd been busy removing the old kitchen, the laminate flooring, some dampness that needed addressing and a few oddities too (a booby-trap window seat made out of the thinnest ply-board imaginable!), plus taking out the old ugly sixties fireplace and were at last ready for the loveliness to begin.

First stop: gorgeous fireplace installation...

Enter camera-shy fireplace fitter...!
{A brief side note on the historians amongst us...
Can you see how the chimney below has had its sides filled in with an additional layer of stonework?
This is very common in older, wider fireplaces as the realisation dawned that thinner openings cause far better air movement and hence a better fire!

First of all our gorgeous cast iron arch was fitted...

And then....

What could this be?!...

Ah, but you'll have to wait for Friday's reveal!!
