Welcome back to Modern Country Style Loves. I haven't done one of these posts for a while but felt it was time to resurrect the series in honour of big wall clocks.
I've been away by the seaside for a few days at my parents' house as part of the children's half-term holiday. It was a lovely ending to what I shall remember as our chicken pox season.....which is now over. Huzzah!!
Yes, one twin got it and then, as he was recovering, the other got it too. Poor little mites. They were so sad and serious and sore and sensitive and (yup, on a roll with this s thang) soporific and spotty.
So I've been housebound for quite some time (hence resorting to bizarre word games to pass the time).....and, after the initial happy-time-baking-and-reading-and-cuddling wore off, was definitely starting to flag.
Going away was just what I needed to give me a bit of a kick start back into the life of a normal person again.
Oh, so *that's* what the outside feels like.
There's nothing in the world quite like a hug from my mummy. ;-)
I'm back again with a bounce in my step.
Do you remember me saying that I was obsessed with huge clocks? And that I love a bit of soft industrial?
I realised that I'm not the only one with a clock-related frenzy so this a blog post dedicated to these beauties. Eye-catching, jaw-dropping, knee-knocking, spine-tingling vintage wall clocks.
Here is my top tip for buying one. It comes from experience. Don't buy one that you haven't seen in the flesh that seems remarkably cheap. Yup, that was me.
The photo looked just what I wanted so I clicked the Buy button and when it arrived.....
I thought those table and chairs were miniature for a moment....until I realised that it's the fireplace and clock that are giant-sized. |
.......it turned out to be a photo, yes, a photo, of a rusty vintage clock stuck atop a new hideous plastic one. Bleeeuurgh.
I returned it after looking at it for less than a second. Soooooooo not the look I want.
It was very cleverly done but seemed to sum up all that I hate about the current craze for faux-vintage. The point of vintage is that it *is* vintage. The dents are because it's been loved and used and has served its time.
Not that it's a cheap mass-produced knock-off.
It was sent back the same day.
I've put together this collection of the very best images of huge wall clocks that I could find.
A vintage clock is a fantastic way to introduce a bit of soft industrial to your home, without going down the hardcore factory look.
I can't wait to show you mine.
It's so good to be back.

Know what you mean about the faux vintage look. I have been stung a few times... never mind, everything starts to look pretty worn and 'vintage' after a couple of weeks in my house! Lx
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!! I know what you mean about being stock in the house. It is my turn now for the last 4 days. Poor wee jack is very sick.
ReplyDeleteRegarding vintage look, you should come to my house everything is very vintage!!! it definetely has this worn and used look!!!
Love those big wall clocks and would love to someday have one of those in the house...but hopefully not as big as the last as that on the last photo.
ReplyDeleteI have a tendency to always sneak a look at wall clocks and with a really big one I bet I would look twice as often, and I don't want that:)
I so know what you mean about 'new made to look old'. we gotta have the real thing!

Glad the spotty session is over with now!
ReplyDeleteI have a bit of a thing for large timepieces too but as yet haven't found one for my wall.
Yes, a hug from Mom always makes one feel better. Nothing compares. Those clock images are all wonderful and I didn't realized how much I liked the until now. I hope your family continues to feel better.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love your new profile picture Sarah!

Chicken pox are going around at our school, too. What a drag. Glad to hear life is back to normal.
ReplyDeleteLove all your lovely images, as usual. Our biggest problem would be, do we set it to real time or ten minutes fast like our other clocks? XOL
Welcome back! I am glad to hear that all is well again!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more on the point of vintage. I'm not into mass produced duplicates, either. Although, I did buy a couple vintage type table clocks with my CSN G.C.. They don't count because they aren't ginormous wall clocks :) It is good to see them in person. I hope you find a clock that makes your heart go pitter patter. Wonderful inspirations!
Happy Saturday! xx ~M
Just lovely!:-)

Sarah,
ReplyDeleteWoW! Those huge wall clocks are gorgeous! However, with only 8 foot ceilings and a small ranch style layout, I have NO ROOM for one. I'll just covet yours!
Your twins hugging is too precious! So sorry that they were ill at the same time. .. so glad they are back to normal. I agree, a hug from one's MuM does more good than anything else in the entire world! Grab all those you can, while you can!
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your sweet comment On Crooked Creek. Stop by again, soon!
Fondly,
Pat
Welcome home Sarah, glad you had a nice visit with your family. Great topic -- I love big clocks! I'm trying to convince my hubby to hang one high on our peaked living room wall. The one in the second picture is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteTHE CLOCK IN THE LAST IMAGE! omg that entry is insane. brilliant.
ReplyDeletedude! i need a thesaurus today to keep up with your vocabulary!
have a fab weekend, gorgeous.

Big is beautiful !!! i like the wooden the most !!...lovely weekend darling....love Ria...xxx...
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE BIG clocks too! My downstairs rooms have 10 foot ceilings so I do have a huge clock that hangs above my fireplace in the family room. People when they come in for the first time always comment on it. My kitchen and breakfast area are joined with the family room and its nice to be able to see it while standing at the stove!
Thanks for sharing all these beautiful photos!
Sorry to hear your little ones had the chicken pox. My kids had those too when they were little.
Have a wonderful Saturday.
Blessings,
Sonya
I especially like the fourth an the last image!
ReplyDeletehave a nice weekend
Mari
Completely smitten with these images. And now the wall that I have been having trouble imagining now has a huge industrial vintage clock on it (in my mind anyways)
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you back Sarah! I hope your children are feeling better as well. Sounds like you had a wonderful time with your Mother. I can't wait to see your new clock!
ReplyDeleteAll of the clocks are wonderful...soft industrial, I love that term. And it definitely goes with the style I am after.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the bum clock...live and learn. I hope you found a fantastic replacement.
Happy Saturday, Sarah!
XO,
Jane
My husband plays and he's is so awesome. He's bought me different instruments, in the past, but I never got the hang of them. So, we've sold all of them; Violin, Guitaro, autoharp, yada, yada, yada...but, I can dance!!!
ReplyDeleteHey honey! I am so glad that you have had a lovely break away, especially with a cuddle from your Mumma - they DO make everything better, don't they!
ReplyDeleteI love these clocks, but do you know what, the homes they are in were catching my eye too! I love the kitchen, with the beams...I can't even remember a clock there LOL And the one with the gorgeous skylights...I love skylights!
SO glad you are back bringing us some soft industrial vintage chic! You are the queen.

Thanks Sarah for your sweet comment. Yes...am trying to push things around a bit on my plate today. I came home from a two hour meeting and put on my sweats. I've cleaned a bit, and feel much better about life. Hoping to just bond with the kiddos today and chill out! :) Hope everyone is well at your house now too!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, love the huge wall clocks, what a statement they make. I agree it's a good piece to have if you like soft industrial without going the whole way with the industrial look. Also, how did you know I loved belgian style! It's definitely right up my street!! Have a good one!!Leahxx
ReplyDeleteSarah, sorry your kiddos had chicken pox but am glad they are better. I love big clocks too and these are splendid examples you have found. Thanks bunches for visiting me. hugs♥O
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah - Lovely to hear from you again! I know what you mean about those family "milestones." My three children got chicken pox one after each other (and then my husband got them as well!) Whenever I smell Pinetarsol now - the memories come flooding back.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE huge clocks also. I have been eyeing off one recently at a furniture store in town but suspect it might well be one of those fake imitations. I'm wondering whether "your" clock might be the one you featured a couple of posts back?? Can't wait to see. (Flooded in here again for the 3rd day in a row - will this rain ever stop!!) ;)Sharyne
I'm so glad chicken pox season is over, and you had a lovely school holiday (or half term. Definitely not Easter or Christmas. I get so confused.)
ReplyDeleteI now want a giant wall clock. I'm pretty sure that you're not a good influence;).
So glad the babes are on the mend. Chicken pox are so not fun! I love big clocks, too. I have one I painted red years ago...and want to redo it now. Hmm...lots of fun inspiration on this post.
ReplyDeleteIt would be neat to live closer! I actually did a search and contacted my fellow Albuquerque bloggers, but one or two comments later I was back where I started. Albuquerqueans just aren't very friendly people, I guess! :p
ReplyDeleteMy mom in law just gave me a funky wall clock . . . kinda modern and old. Haven't decided yet, if I like it.
ReplyDeletefondly,
Glenda
so glad you're back and everyone is getting well. Yes, I share your enthusiasm for oversized clocks. So looking forward to seeing yours!
ReplyDeleteSorry about the chicken pox, but good to hear that things are looking up :-)
ReplyDeleteI love, love, LOVE huge wall clocks, and I'm especially coveting the clock AND the architecture in that last picture! Also love the big clock and the big lamp in the first picture.
Thanks so much for visiting my blog and signing up to follow - I'm following ya back :-)
I love huge wall clocks too, vintage and soft industrial - exactly. Can't wait to see yours.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your household survived the chicken pox experience and got it out of the way.
Take care.
Roeshel
Hi Sarah, glad the chicken pox have gone. I rememeber them well. Love big clocks. You've picked some awesome ones to show. I'm after a nice french vintage looking one. Glad you didn't settle for the dodgy one. It's incredible how different things can look in reality compared to how they're marketed. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Lisa x
Sick kiddos make me sad - they are pitiful, but then I am ready to get on with the show! Glad you are on the other end of the chickenpox season...ick!
ReplyDeleteLOVING the clocks...I want a big ginormous clock so badly - I am thinking I am making one. Can't wait till you show us yours!
Fun post Sarah! I love huge clocks too. My favorite one is the big wood one in the white white kitchen. Genius!
ReplyDeleteOh they are so gorgeous they just make all those spaces xox
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear everything is back to normal again! I hope you've managed to put your feet up and enjoy a big mug of tea! :)
ReplyDeleteRustic vintage clocks are one of my obsessions too, so these gorgeous images are an absolute treat! I look forward to one day having a house that can pull off a large one.
Totally with you about the faux-vintage - bleeeuurgh!
Can't wait to see yours!
Meera xx

Ohhhh love these. I've been wanting a big ol' clock too, but I'm scared of ordering something and having it look crappy. I can't wait to see what you found.
ReplyDeleteThat is too bad about your wee ones. Have they recovered? My kids got the chicken pox vaccine so, hopefully, I won't ever experience that.
Hope your days away were wonderful :)
Chicken pox? Bummer.
ReplyDeleteGreat assortment of oversized clocks....love it.
Mary Ann
Glad your little ones are feeling better. My twins haven't had chicken pox yet. Apparently they've been outlawed here in the U.S. :-) Actually, so many have gotten the vaccine that it isn't as common as when my older kids were young. I know from experience that it's not full proof so I was kind of hoping they'd catch them by now.
ReplyDeleteThose clocks are beautiful. My parents had a grandfather clock when I was growing up, and I used to love to listen to it at night. (They still have it).
Have a wonderful week dear Sarah!
Blessings,
Marcia
So glad you've bounced back! Love huge clocks and hope to find a really good authentic one someday :)
ReplyDeleteGreat examples...the last three are amazing! Fun post!
