Style Britannia: Kate Middleton

Ever wanted to know how to put a new look together?
You've come to the right place....

Welcome to Style Britannia,
where you'll get to see exactly how
 to dress to perfection in
English Modern Country Style.

Today we're breaking down aspects of
Kate Middleton's casual style,
which is
English Modern Country to a tee....
traditional country basics given a gorgeous modern twist.

I've gathered together images with a common theme to help us establish how to make this style our own.

First up, is a classic
Modern Country example:
skinny jeans tucked into boots.

What makes this Modern Country?
The look has its roots in jodhpurs and riding boots - traditional country - but has been perfectly updated by switching to denim and low heels.

That's the beginnings of
Modern Country Style, see?

When I look at inspiration pictures - interiors or fashion - as well as admiring, what I want to know is
'How Can I Do That Myself?'

Not as a straightforward copy - that never works for me - but in ascertaining exactly what it is that I love, and drawing together a whole new delicious Modern Country look.

This is one of my best looks in the world.
Skinny jeans and boots are
a must-have staple.
One of those looks that's hard to do badly.
Do you agree?

But, while skinny jeans and boots are a fabulous start, it needs something extra, right?

Come back tomorrow to find out what's missing.....

  1. I love this look, my height does not reach the requirement though, ;) But love it on Kate, and younger women. I do love her vintage tops, the petite floral prints and lacy looks too, can't wait to see tomorrow's post, xxx tami

  2. Nooooooo, there's no way that age should count this look out, I don't think....or height (that's what heels are for if necessary..).

  3. You are making me want to run out and buy boots. They are my fave! I would wear them to bed, haha. I like the casual modern country look because I rarely get the chance to dress up and this is the style I feel most comfortable in.
Well, off to saddle up the horses and get the kids to school :)
    Have a great Monday, sweetpea!

  4. I too love this look, but I remember the 1980s too well to put on a pair of skinny jeans.

  5. Aaah, yes, but with boots, it's like a whole new look, y'see.

I won't have a single word spoek against them. Haha!!!!

  6. Love this look, but I've always worried that I wouldn't be able to pull it off. I love that she doesn't wear boots with enormous heels. Great start to this series, Sarah.

  7. OK, Sarah . . . help us out here. If you are short and not skinny . . . should you attempt skinny jeans and boots?

    Fondly,
    Glenda

  8. Great look- used to wear it myself a "few" years back! I love how you break down the look just like you would for an interior design, very fun. I'm guessing the other element is the belt.

  9. Yes, definitely, Glenda! As long as they fit properly, I think, this look is fab, fab, fab!

  10. Its a fabulous look, though Kate is so stylish, she looks good in all the outfits. Next winter I will have to invest in a pair of boots - I have the skinny jeans, but being only 5'1" they can make a short girl look rather imbalanced (depending on what I wear on top); I'd love the boots! :))

  11. I have practically LIVED in skinny jeans and boots this past fall/winter and never thought I could pull that look off. But once I realized I could...Look out! LOL! I love that Kate (Catherine) has brought such a timeless classic and yes, also modern style back in to the forefront, you know? In a time where what we see on TV is less clothing and more skin, it is refreshing for her to be a role model for young ladies! Love this series my friend and I can't wait for tomorrow!

P.S. Thank you so much for your incredibly sweet comment on Sunday's post! :-)

  12. Love the look! Next fall I need to find some boots that I really love.

  13. Skinnies with chunky thighs billowing out are a problem Sarah!! Flares or bootcut (remember them??) balance out us shortlegged, pear shapes. A longer top and heels is the only way I feel good with this combo. I agree heartily that with slim thighs and small hips it is a fabulous and super practical look, but body proportion is important, no?

  14. Love this look! But my days of skinny jeans are long gone....

  15. I need to get some flat boots to wear with jeans. I love my heeled boots with knee-length skirts, though. I think anyone can pull this off--but the hippier among us (very few have Kate's proportions in real life--I sure don't) need a long cardigan or tunic to skim over the hips and upper thighs. Skinny doesn't have to mean super tight, either, if larger thighs go along with hippier hips. I think the boots give the same visual weight as bootlegs, but look modern and up-to-date. This is a fun series--thanks Sarah!

  16. I adore her style!! I love how original she is.

  17. I agree with you...this is a gorgeous look! I also agree with Belinda that it may be impractical for the extremely short person or the not-so-skinny girl :) The biggest issue that I can relate to regarding this is that I've fluctuated in weight depending on whether or not I was pregnant, etc. At times, my calves are too thick to wear the high boots. That is frustrating... Great post! Thanks for this and I'm really looking forward to more tomorrow!:)

Gosh I feel sooooo "old n' fat" right now!!! She's just toooo darling~ annnnnd, IMHO, just what England "NEEDS" right now!!!

  22. Love her look! I bought the cutest tall boots at the Bass outlet for like $37.00! They look much more expensive. I haven't worn them with jeans yet. I guess I better hurry up before the weather gets any warmer!

  23. sarah, what a well put-together collection of photos you have here. love the elucidation. i do totally get the modern country look with this post! :) i love boots but it was impractical to wear often in the tropics. as soon as i got back to more temperate climes, I got the boots! now i live in them!

  24. It is such a classic English country look!

  25. HI Sarah, I love this look, but I think it matters what you wear on the top half depending on your shape and the boots have to be just right. Maybe you could model the look for us...hehe..Leahxx

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think you could adapt this look for different ages and shapes. You are right, age should not be a restriction. I love the little velvet jacket she is wearing in one of the pics. Boots and jeans are always a good one. She is tall, but they are great for little peeps like me. I think you should model this look for us too. Maybe you should host a personal style blog party. I am quite nosy and love seeing the people behind the blogs. xx

  27. I am so in love with Kate and her style. I love that you say height nor age should matter because I don't have the height and I'm certainly old enough to be her mom. It's so fun to see the pictures you post.

  28. That girl has so much effortless style...and quite the boot collection!

I agree...with skinny jeans and boots, you can never go wrong!

  29. Love, love, love! I adore her look.

  30. I have my skinny jeans which I've outgrown lol, hanging in my cupboard. Who knows, maybe one day.

  31. I need to get me some boots! I like mine with a little bit of a heel though...it's more slimming. I'm not loving the whole skinny jean thing right now though. I'm feeling a little too plump :)

  32. Kate is gorgeous! I love her style! I have not considered buying myself a pair of boots, but after this post I want to go out and grab myself a pair or two!

  33. hehe she looks like an Aussie in that first shot! She's liking those styled boots isn't she? :P She looked amazing at the wedding.

  37. I think if the fit is
    good, and the wearer is
    fit, this look CAN transcend
    age. Otherwise, as many
    mentioned, a bit of tweaking
    with a tunic or long
    cardy can balance things
    out. This is most definitely
    one of my wardrobe staples,
    even though Kate could be
my daughter if I'd been a
    teen mom : ) I would love
to see her usher in an era
    of more lady-like dressing.
Right now there is a lot of
    UGH out there ~ especially
    dresses and skirts that are
    unflatteringly short. And
    short shorts....don't get
    me started!
    xx Suzanne

  38. I do love this look. I just haven't had the courage to buy the skinny jeans. My hips have widened over the years!

  39. She is gorgeous and love the boots. Thanks for adding your link to Beach Cottage Good Life Wednesdays.

  40. I think proportion is definitely part of the consideration - I'm short and curvy and I love the skinny jean and boots look - in fact, I have about 7 pairs of knee length boots, I'm sort of addicted but they look fab with skirts, dresses, leggings (!!) and jeans... yum yum. Totally matters what you wear on top of it though, it's all about balancing out the proportions and knowing what suits your figure! ;)

  41. I was in the P.O. yesterday and saw a woman who was about 40 or so and was clearly mimicking this style. She looked great! And...I was super excited to see that her boots were slit up the back and had a buckle to adjust them. I just might get some over my calves after all! Ha! ;)

  42. I love Kate's style...She so remind me of French women style, which I love and adore. I've been wearing similar boots and belt for ages now and actually thought they are out of fashion now. I am very pleased that is not!!! BTW I liked the pictures of you too. You looked very nice Sarah. See you soon. xx

  43. Sweet! I love boots! She really knows how to work them. And so do you girlfriend!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't like the way skinny jeans look on me, but after seeing how good they look on you, I think I will try them on again. I think the boots have a lot to do with it, and if I was wearing slim boots, maybe I wouldn't feel like a stump in skinny jeans. You rock! Thanks!
