The Holiday Houses: Modern versus Country

Welcome to my brand new series on The Holiday film sets.
...and now it's the turn of The Holiday houses.

The Holiday features two gorgeous interiors:
one English Country and the other American Modern.

{Perfect for Modern Country Stylists to fight agonise over.}
;-)

So I thought I'd create a little series to focus on both,
to look at their strengths and weaknesses (gasp!) and
to indulge in the gorgeous film sets that Nancy Meyer has created.

I love the feeling of being gradually eased into the Christmas season. It's only November so I thought I'd use a very gentle introduction to lead us into my favourite month of the whole year.

First up, The Holiday kitchens.....

Prepare your boxing gloves for the fight of the century....
No kicking or pinching...

  11. I'm leaning towards Rose Cottage - only because I've been reading my Perfect English Cottage, by Ros Byam Shaw, and the interiors are just too cosy for words.

  18. As much as I love La La land the English house wins hands down for me - if only, like Father Christmas, it was real ;-)

  22. Now you're talking - The Holiday is one of my favourite Christmas films. I am not especially taken with the American pad but, oh, how I love the English cottage. The clothes that Cameron Diaz wears are gorgeous too. Let's not forget Jude either... swoon.

  23. My darling you have the most lovely blog, it brightens my days at dreary desk job dreaming about gorgeous country things!
Have you taken a tour around the set of Sophie Dahl's cooking show yet?? I'm just dying to find out more about it and the objects used. So if you haven't already, pleease do because I think it is the embodiment of Modern Country style and quite frankly the real star of the show!
Thanks for creating such a lovely escape for your readers and I'm looking forward to what's in store during the festive season! Much love xx xx Karoline

  25. Oh Sarah, we must be kindred spirits. I LOVE that movie--it is one of my all-time favorites (although I have to take exception to the whole sleeping-with-strangers thing). And that cottage? It's a dream of mine to just traipse all over England until I find it so I can hug it. Lovely.

  26. I did a whole post last year about Iris's house in Shere (you probably know its not a real house but a set). We are looking to move in a similar house perhaps this winter - we are nervous about the draftiness, etc. But so excited to live in a place so picturesque! So you've totally hit a chord with me - in a great way :)

  32. One of my favourite movies! The cottage reminds me of the 1850s stone cottage we used to own a few years ago. It certainly had its quirks but that was definitely part of its charm xo
