Children's Bedrooms: Flooring Inspiration

Flooring can make or break a room.
It's such an easy aspect to overlook but leaving tatty old carpet down while you spruce up the rest of the room is a bit like leaving one of the walls undecorated. When we decorate a room, I always try to do the whole shabang and not leave bits and pieces of extra work trailing around for years.

So, flooring-wise, here's what I narrowed our choices down to:

Carpet:

Unknown

Painted floorboards:

Via Marie Claire

Wooden flooring:

Via Something Hiding In There

I bypassed natural flooring like sisal and jute because although they look gorrrrrgeous initially, they stain pretty easily and don't react well to the wet.
{If I could have a pound for each time I've had to mop up what shall be vaguely termed 'spillages' in my children's bedrooms then I'd be a very rich lady...}

Which leads me onto my main point....

When decorating children's rooms, it's so easy to be sucked in by what looks great on the page of a catalogue...BUT BUT BUT what really counts is how good it'll look in YOUR home....a year or two down the line.....

Fancy-shmancy options will look fab for a little while but I want our rooms to look great when they're well-lived in.

Is that too much too ask?

  1. Personally if I could I would go with either the painted floor or the wood. much easier to clean up spills.

  2. Hey friend! I totally agree with you about choosing things that have staying power for a kids' room. Especially since their rooms change so much as they grow! Can't wait to see what you end up doing! :-)

  3. I agree totally Sarah, nobody lives in a catalogue! I'd go for wood every time, tactile and warm. Have a lovely weekend. Sharon x

  4. Wood flooring for me all the way. If I had my way, we'd have it through the whole house including the stairs and bedrooms (with cozy throw rugs on the floor for cold morning feet) but W likes carpet upstairs. Personally, I don't like having to get stains out of carpet after the cats puke. Nice, eh?

Agree that it can make or break a room - the dining room and hallway both need the wood floor redone and it KILLS ME everytime I go in those rooms that they've not been done yet... fingers crossed it's this year!

Looking forward to seeing you work your magic on this project!

Have a fabulous weekend my dear! xxx

  5. Wood flooring is practical and versatile as you can change the decor without the expense of new flooring.

  6. Oh, how I wish I had wood floors in my kids' rooms! Instead, they have white carpet which was here when we bought the house. Totally impractical!!! I would love to have a painted wood floor someday. I think they are very cool :)

  7. You are such a sensible lady Sarah. I had wooden flooring put down in all the bedrooms a while ago. In the sitting and dining rooms I chose pale carpet, oh how I regret it now, as soon as we can afford it it is wood flooring all around. METHOD do a wonderful squirty cleaner, GOOD FOR WOOD, it makes the floors as good as new in a jiffy, so handy for little 'spillages'. Have a great weekend xxx

  8. hi sarah.

we've mostly used wall to wall carpet in bedrooms for soundproofing and comfort, but oh to have natural hardwoods topped with soft woolen rugs! lovely!

  9. I love that first picture, the home decor accents are fantastic. This is some great inspiration for my new room. I bought a few things from World to Home so hopefully I can make it look just as cool. Thanks for sharing!

  10. If you already have wood underneath and it's not great, paint it! If you are going to buy new flooring, maybe get a nice mid tone wood. It never goes out, and mixes well when light woods are "in" or when dark woods are "in" like now.
    That's my 2c worth.

  11. I'm tossing in my vote along with all of those voting for wood floors. With a water based finish they are easy to mop up so long as the liquid isn't sitting there for days.

  12. If I was doing a kids room I would do vinyl 'nice looking floors' that mop easy and throw rugs.

  13. For kids rooms I found in expensive rugs are your best option on existing flooring, once they are ruined or the child's tastes change its easy to update, so glad I did this within our home

  14. We have wood floors and we love them. They are really easy to keep clean and you can add rugs for winter or remove them for cooler rooms on the hot months too. I hope your decision comes easy to you. God bless x

  15. My youngest is 19 and coming home from college for the summer...sure there will be spills. We have wood floors in his room now. In our last house, we had wall to wall seagrass in his room (when he was 12 to 15years old) and it really seemed to absorb the Gatorade and such stains. Good luck!

  16. Painted floorboards are growing on me lately... I never would have thought of it only two years ago... But I totally agree floors are not something you must only have a fling with... It's more of a serious relationship, that hopefully will last forever... So you must get along well with them!

  17. I have absolutely no experience with kids but I definitely favor the wood floor or the painted one.

I have no use for carpet plus if the child has allergies carpet is a bad idea.

  20. I heart the wood floors - ours are polished with lots of marks and character like blemishes but clean ups are a breeze, dust does not settle in, cleaning is simple and the look is timeless :)best le xox

  21. I love the look of wood but with my kids jumping off their beds all the time, carpeting is the only way to go for us!

  22. No matter what flooring type you choose, a professional will give you an assessment of your house will give you an estimate before you decide to hire that company.

  23. You are used carpet in bedrooms just amazing as well as decorate a room. This is some great inspiration for my new room. I impressed by that.

  24. That's right. The type of flooring can make or break the appeal of a room, so choose your flooring wisely. Metal or ceramic tiles are dangerous to toddlers. If you have toddlers at home, it would be best if you buy air flooring tiles - these are so advisable, especially if you have kids that love to play around the house.
