It's always a slippery little monkey deciding
which white to choose to go with a particular wall colour,
don't you find?
Some prefer using off-whites.
Some prefer using a version Pure Brilliant White.
Not me.
No, siree.
My choice is to use Dulux White.
Well, I say 'my choice', what I mean is my mum's!!
Yes, this is a fantastic tip that has been passed down from mother to daughter
(as all the best tips are...!)...
and now I can pass it on to you.
I've used it in every room we've decorated to create the connection between spaces that I find makes a home feel so much more of a harmonious whole.
You sometimes have to rummage about a bit on shop shelves
to avoid the glare of Pure Brilliant White
and unearth a can of plain old Dulux White
but the results are well worth it.
It's useful to consider what your chosen 'white' colour will fade to,
as, unless you like to repaint every year, that faded version will be
the colour you'll be living with the majority of the time
...and *not* the brand new sparkliness of a fresh coat of gloss.
Pure Brilliant White tends to age to grey.
{a bit too Modern...}
Off-white can age to become rather darker than I personally like.
{a bit too Country}
But Dulux White ages to a lovely, gentle white....
Modern Country Style at it's best:
contrast and warmth}
Voila...
..and here it is looking rather brighter and newer,
now that it's been repainted as part of
our Gorgeous Girls' Bedroom Makeover...
(the two wall colours are Farrow and Ball Hay
if you'd like to see more images of these colours
then just click on the links)
Now, if there's anything a girl needs to feel right at home in her bedroom then it has to be a gorgeous bed, right?
Guess what's coming up?

I don't often think of how the paint will mellow through the years...we've never stayed in one place long enough to find out!
ReplyDeleteOoh! Wish I had read thus last year!! I have never thought about how white paint ages!
ReplyDeleteI have slowly been replacing our horrid pale yellow walls in our home with white,, but found it really hard to find a white I liked! I wanted a warm white but not too cream. Settled on dulux fair Bianca half in the end.
Aaah interesting. I'll look out for that one. We have an off white (sail white) in our living room and a brilliant white in our bedroom. I have to say I was delighted with the brilliant white as the previous occupants had painted the bedroom aubergine. Now when I say aubergine, I really do mean aubergine. It was really dark, verging on black. Hated it. Was going to paint the bedroom yellow but stopped at the brilliant white becuase it was so ummmmm white. And with that I'll love you and leave you. xx
ReplyDeleteI guess I never realized that paint colours fade over time! or that the off-white paint I've just painted every room in will change colours on me! SARAH!! Why did you not post this two months ago before I began painting! lol
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip. Have a wonderful day!
Great tip - something I never thought of! Have a great week!

My husband is making our fourteen year old daughter a bed made from salvaged wood. It is looking great!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite white is Benjamin Moore's Superwhite. :D
Thank you so much for the tip Sarah, Dulux here I come.xxx
ReplyDelete... Now you're baiting me with what's to come! Naughty! lol
ReplyDeleteI am the ever ready little fish on the line - completely hooked to see what it coming next.
I wish I got to choose the colours for our house. We rent a propery from my Husband's work, so the walls are somewhere between a very light latte and cream. It's ok, but antique white and some of the other shades of white might lighten the old place up a bit! :)
Hope your week is off to a good start. When is that li'l bubba going to put in an appearance?
I am very interested in the Dulux White. Who makes it and do you use the oil or latex on your woodwork? I always thought the latex didn't fade. But I have been wrong before.
ReplyDeleteThe paint is made by Dulux and we used oil-based gloss on the woodwork....

Well! This is good to know. I am a bit tired of my cream paintwork and I hate the DAZZLING BRILLIANT WHITE PAINT. So, to have a calm ordinary white might be good. Amazing what you find in blogland I came here through a link for bunting.Thank you.
ReplyDeleteGreat pointer about white(s) Sarah...they do change with time, sunlight, other elements....Dulux White is added to my list of "white"!
ReplyDeleteBUT! where do you buy this white paint please? it isn't in the Dulux brochure.
ReplyDeleteI've included the link to Relics of Witney who stock Dulux White...hope that helps!

Unusual to see a gloss finish when all the gurus are leaning towards matt. Have you used this Dulux white on skirting boards? I used Eggshell in my last house and found they looked grubby and dusty very quickly. I've just moved so this could be a chance to change.
