Country Kitchen Rule Three: Open Shelving

Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats.
The Country Kitchen show is about to begin.

 I give you....
{drum roll}
......open shelving.....

Now, down to the nitty-gritty.
Let's be frank.

Reason number one
why I like open shelving
is that it makes it all the easier to
nose around people's kitchens in gorgeous homes.
But let's leave my stalking tendencies to one side
for the sake of decency, shall we?

Reason number two, and, granted,
perhaps slightly more important than any nosiness value,
{if such a thing is possible}
is that they provide storage in a way that leaves
the room feeling less closed in.

I love 'em and had to get me some in our kitchen.
More of that next week.

But tomorrow?
I fancy a little bitta denim.....

I'm very excited about the Spode giveaway
Have you entered yet?
Check it out here, if you haven't....it's LUSH!

  2. I love the wood counter tops! These are all great images. I have open shelving in my lakehouse and love it. Now if I could just have the counter tops I want!

  3. That kitchen with the dark cabinets and the black countertop is divine. I have open shelving, but not by choice. The previous owners of our home took all the upper cabinet doors off!

  4. I like the open shelving concept. It really adds character to any kitchen. Also, love how kitchens are bringing back the "open hutch" look. Wish we had space to make that look work. Gorgeous!
    A sweet day to you :) ~M

  7. We are gearing up to overhaul our kitchen, and since it is very tiny, we are doing open shelving. Thanks for the inspiration pics, it is good to see how it works in different situations :)

  13. I'm a big fan of your "kitchen" posts. I am before many big decisions about my new kitchen in house we are renovating at the moment.
I love the look of open shelving, but I hate dust and cleaning. but really hate. ;-) I still haven't decided if I want them or not. ;-)

BTW - thank you for visiting and commenting on my blog. This week I am posting about new jewelry - many new pieces.

  15. Open shelving is one thing that my kitchen does not have. I should have thought about that when we were designing it. I do have two open shelves in the eating area, I guess that counts, doesn't it. I love the thought of open shelving, but with the amount of dust that accumulates in my house I really don't know if that would work for me.
I love the idea, though, and I love the images you showed us today. Very lovely country kitchens for sure!!!
    Hugs, Cindy

  19. I am swooning over all that open shelving. I especially love the shelves and brackets in the second photo. Wish I had more wall space in my kitchen. I'd certainly add a little shelving.

  21. Okay, you're torturing me. I want open shelving so bad and when I see these pretty pictures I want it even more!

  22. I love open shelving too! Isn't it interesting how many of us do--but it's not that common, except in cabins and cottages.

  23. Hi Sarah!

Open shelving is always a beautiful choice in a kitchen! These pictures are lovely examples of it, too! :) I couldn't convince my husband to let me replace the upper cabinets with open shelving, but I did take the doors off, which helped. But we're adding a whole wall of open shelving, which kind of takes the edge off not taking down the cabinets. ;)

How was your week? I hope you have a great Friday! :)

    Blessings and hugs,
    Jenni

  24. I have open shelving in my kitchen ...... which I made with my own hands in my husbands workshop. Very proud of myself. I wish it was just filled with beautiful things, but we don't have enough room for that. It's full of essentials (i.e. boring stuff!)

  27. No! No open shelving!

I had open shelving in my last kitchen when three cupboard doors fell off. Now the range hood didn't work properly, so everything in the upper open cabinet developed a nice layer of fat combined with dust.

Imagine you haven't realised the range hood doesn't work and you reach up to grab something you haven't used for a while...

Trust me, there will be NO open shelving in my new kitchen!

  28. Haha, Chookie!
Someone has a resolution on how to find a compromise between something I like a lot and something that will work for me in real life?
If you find this compromise, don't forget to share it with me, please. :D

  29. I have a love/hate relashionship with open shelving. I adore the look they give to a country kitchen, but I'm not found of the dusting they imply... I guess my future will have to include some (I want people to see my best china!), but also some cabinets so I can hide my mess. I seem to be the only blogger whose kitchen tend to get messy!!!

  30. I too love the look of open shelving and these images are gorgeous! They're going into my inspiration folder for when I have my grown up house and get to design my kitchen!

  31. It's the brackets that make your shelves a stand out.
