Edwardian Porches

Remember the gorgeous porch I shared on Friday?
(see here if you missed it)

I have Edwardian porches on the brain...

Edwardian houses in the South of England were generally built with a porch of some kind, either set into the house or protruding outwards, usually within the space next to the bay window. 

They range from the enormous...

 
to the extremely modest....

 

and from the city...

 

to the country...

 

And I love them!

So if you were to design your own, where would you start?
{Because that's what's going on inside my busily nesting head this week....}

    Wow, that first porch is gorgeous. They are all nice though. We have a nice porch that has gotten simpler over the 100 years of our house. Some of the original trim had to be replaced over the years and it is too difficult and expensive to reproduce.

    Ha, ha! I have a whole file on my computer on porches... I will have to rebuild mine one day or an other. One that stays in my mind is the one you can see in that picture of Beatrix Potter in front of her house... Mine will have to be screened though... Or I might change my mind about that!

    You know what? I just rewatched Beatrix Potter's porch... and it's ugly! Funny how my memory had transformed it into something beautiful... My version of it will be beautiful... Or so I hope!

    Beautiful porches! I love the glassed-in one in the first picture. My little duplex is not edwardian at all (faux cape cod instead), but it desperately needs a bigger porch to help with the sun/heat problem in the summer from all our south-facing windows.

    I think you need a big porch, with comfy rocking chairs ... to rock the sweet wee one, come June.

    Gathering pictures to stir the imagination is the best first step.
    But before the final decision, things to consider are

    1. Use- Do you need space for a bench? A place to set packages?

    2. Exposure- If the entrance is particularly exposed to nature's temper tantrums, you will want more enclosure.

    3. Lighting- You want everything to be as lovely at night as in the daylight

    4. Blend- What elements blur the line between architecture, interior and garden design.

    5. Punch- You need no advice here):-

    Wow~
    such beautiful porches.
    I'd have to say;

    1.) would be too HOT for Texas...all that glass, would be like an oven. But beautiful all the same.
    2.) reminds me of the porch on our little house thet I grew up in...I've a memory of a kiss stolen on a porch much like that one. {wink}
    3.) Makes me think as I step off this porch I could travel by foot to a local market,baker, beauty salon, or dress shop and chat with close friends along the way!
    4.) my favorite. Very Country-fied!
    I like it because it is secluded and I could drink a nice glass of ICE Tea and enjoy a quaint country view~

    I love a porch and would incorporate one wrapped around like a balcony. Large enough for entertaining and probably not enclosed so one could enjoy good weather.
