What are the areas worth investing in when renovating? Storage has to be up there somewhere on your list. Don't you agree? It's one of the areas that's totally worth paying for: beautiful, good quality storage will last you a lifetime....and beyond. I always think that you could have the most beautiful things in the world but if they're covered in clutter then the effect is lost.
Clutter is the enemy of beauty.
I am a girl who...ahem....likes her clothes. Shoes, jumpers, dresses, tops, trousers, skirts, underwear, shorts, jackets, scarves, hats, coats....... Not to mention Mr Modern Country's collection.
That's a lot of stuff to store!
We were going to need a lot of cupboards!
The look I wanted in our Master Bedroom was Attic Chic. Yes, I made that up and I'm rather proud of it!!
I wanted to embrace the beams, the crooked lines, the wonky floor, the sloping ceiling of our top floor. It's what gives this room bags of character. I love the look of attic rooms that have original built in cupboards. It's quite common in Edwardian houses because very often the servants' quarters were on the top floor, and any other unwanted clutter was kept up there too. Hence big cupboards up were needed.
Our Edwardian house has had many of it's features removed over the years so it feels right to be putting something like this into the house. Even though they won't be original, they will be in keeping.
After a good, long browse around, I decided that Shaker style cupboards, painted white, were the way I wanted to go with this room.
I found lots of inspiration pictures but it was actually pretty hard to find a picture of exactly what I wanted so I kind of pieced together the bits I liked from a hotch-potch of different photos. Although this was more work, it did give me the chance to design our cupboards more or less from scratch, rather than trying to squeeze someone else's design into our space, which never really works, does it?
And when I say that it was work for me, between you and me, that's not entirely accurate because it's this bit, the designing things just for us, that I love!
Which is your favourite?
Next time, I'll be posting up all the details, good and bad but, in the meantime, here's a little peek of what we achieved....

ReplyDeleteI have def reached the age when storage is sexy - how sad!!
In a big room, freestanding and proud, reclaimed, painted with simple panelling would be my choice - and I think I'm going to love yours! In a small room, freestanding big pieces can dominate slightly, so I'd go with less obtrusive fitted, same colour as walls.
Wish I'd made some less rushed decisions about storage about10 years ago!
Nice collection of photos. The first one grabbed my attention right away. Can't wait to see the outcome of your storage project.
ReplyDeleteOooh! I am intrigued. We were discussing storage for our master bedroom (or playroom if we convert our loft) this week and it is such a dilemma! I love some of these pictures though. I am a great believe in big storage so that clutter can all be hidden away and only lovely things on display. I am trying to teach my husband this concept! Look forward to next instalment. Have a lovely weekend!
ReplyDeleteNumber one is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteOops...favourite of course.
ReplyDeleteDear Sarah, I do not have anything that is 'fitted' but have always secretly admired those gliding doors that magically hide all manner of clutter and the detritus of life. For me, the unfitted, shabby look is the one I prefer. I call it country house chic.....I have no idea how others refer to it!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE those cupboards!!! Just beautiful each in its own way!! Hugs, Rachel
ReplyDeleteI love these pics/inspirations! We have a small bedroom without a closet...so I am contemplating a free-standing unit and hopefully integrating it well so it looks like part of the room!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your finished work! :o)
Happy Saturday!
Greta
Your wardrobes are gorgeous, wow! Our W.I.R. is on my to do list, it's ghastly! You've inspired me..Rachaelxx
ReplyDeleteI love all your inspiration pictures, they are gorgeous! I would love something like in my room!! I cannot wait to see what you have come up with!!!! And I like your "Attic Chic" That is so great!! :)
ReplyDeleteI have just stumbled across your blog. I love what you have created with your wardrobe. I have just designed a similar thing myself and it's so nice to retain this lovely old style. Have a great weekend, Lisa
ReplyDeleteI love all of them. I designed all the cabinets for my closets. I measured my luggage, counted my shoes, and what not. I love it when there is a place for everything and everything is in it's place ;)
ReplyDeleteI love your term Attic Chic...it reminds me of my term boathouse furniture...ie furniture rich people put in their boathouse, thats not fit for the main house, haha cheers Katherine PS i may have to borrow your term xx
ReplyDeleteI like the old one - nice pictures
ReplyDeleteHi! When we moved to our 100 year old house, there were no cupboards or wardrobes. And we had so much stuff from our previous house, which had a huge attic and lots of cupboards. My decluttering started then, and became a lifetime long process. I realized that I only needed a fraction I had. My daughter living at home, has a custom made cupboard in her room and we managed to fit a small walk- in wardrobe room near the master bedroom during the renovation 15 years ago.
ReplyDeleteI agree, cupboards are needed, but if you are not careful, things start to clutter. Therefore I favor only a sensible amount of storage place. I want to know what is where.
I like the first picture most. The alcove cupboard is nice too : )m
My favorite cupboard is photo #2. I also really like the one with reclaimed wood. I hope you get the storage of your dreams!!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, thanks so much for stopping by and your comment. I love the white cabinets. Happy Sunday.
ReplyDeleteohh I'm so excited to see the final unveiling! It is looking really good so far.
ReplyDeleteOooh....I love them all!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a way to store all of your things:)
