The Holiday Houses: Bedrooms

Here we are at The Holiday movie set again.

Today, we're in the bedroom.
Or bedrooms, to be precise.

Yes, we've been comparing Amanda's huuuuge American Modern house,
with Iris' small but perfectly formed English Country Cottage
from the movie The Holiday.
So far, the hot favourite has been the cottage.

Now, the bedroom is where things start to hot up for me.
{Ahem}

However, I'm not plumping for Iris' Rosehill Cottage bedroom.
I know the ceiling is beautiful and vaulted.
And I do love that fire blazing in the corner.

But it's just not for me.
Too much stuff.
Too much colour.
And the bedstead doesn't look comfy to lean against with a good book.

I like my bedroom to be relaxed and calm and serene.

I love Amanda's American bedroom.
There....I've said it!!!
Do you remember those automatic blinds?
I love the restful colour scheme.
The feeling of cocconing.
The pillows piled high.

But I'm guessing that lots of you still love this:

Am I right?
I await your furious response....

  1. Hi there Sarah!

I LOVE that movie! I watch it over and over this time of the year. I also do not love tons of color, but I think Iris' room is full of lovely character! Did you know her 'old' cottage was built brand new just for the movie? I was kind of sad when I found that out, but that means maybe I can get one just like it built for me :) Have a great weekend!

  2. (This is another fav movie of mine!) Cameron Diaz wrapped up in gloves and hat, does not make me think the room is cosy and warm..also not liking the cottagey look too much in the bedroom...LOVE the LA bedroom, the spaciousness, the colours, AND THE AUTOMATIC BLINDS!

  3. I'd love the cozy bed and that big glass of wine BUT the closet space in the Californian bedroom is calling my name rather agressively. :-)

  4. Yup, I'm a sucker for the cottage room. I'm sure you guessed that somehow...

  5. I love this film and the cottage is gorgeous!
    I follow you :)

  6. Love this movie and the cottage BUT that rug in Amanda's bedroom looks much more warm, soft and inviting.

  7. Well missus, I definitely prefer the cottagey one. I like the bed - what it needs is a few more cushions to snuggle against. I like a bit of "stuff" and "colour" The other bedroom looks a bit, dare I say, bland.

    Have a lovely weekend. xxx

  8. Oh I am Iris ALL THE WAY! :)

I have the Make it Merry announcement up today. I can't wait to see your creation.

  9. I do adore the cottage look but not this one.. it was too much. I'm not saying I'd complain though if I had to spend a vacation there or anything....

  10. I love Iris's bedroom. To me it is warm and inviting. The other is cold and uninviting to me. We all have our likes and dislikes. It is what makes the world interesting. PattiO

  11. oh the cottage again! that ceiling does me in!

  12. In a perfect world, I'd go for a hybrid of the two rooms! Cozy, but not quite as cluttered. Less color. But, if I had to choose - I'd go with the cottage. I'm a sucker for charm. :)

  13. This isn't quite my dream of a cottage bedroom. I know that the ceiling is amazing - but in a sort of shed-like way. No, this room looks like an extra space for guests in the outhouse: furnished with all the unwanted stuff that has been moved-out of the house.

  14. I love Iris' room...I am all out cozy and comfy!

  15. Yeah, I'm TOTALLY with you on this one. Iris's bedroom is very cute, but it just doesn't beckon the same way that Amanda's does. The auto blinds are awesome, but I'm drawn to the gorgeous calm bedding and the soft and cozy carpet against dark wood. I want that room!!

  16. They are so different, but I love them both. If I lived by myself I might take the cottage one, but in a busy household it's nice to have a calm retreat. I like Amanda's very much, except for the rug.

  17. I love them both! The cottage bedromm looks cosy, but you are right I do not like the headboard.

I like Amandas bedroom because it is peaceful and serene. And it goes with the rest of the fabulous house.

What a fun set of posts this is...

love the movie, love chic flicks.

    Have a fabulous weekend!

  18. I admit the cottage bedroom appeals to me in many ways, sans the bed, I don't like the hard look of the headboard. There are elements that I like about the more modern bedroom, but it isn't quite my style either. Maybe a mix of the two, a cleaner look in the warmer cottage space?

  19. I still like the Rosehill Cottage best. Yes, I might take a few things off of the wall, but the pillows make the bed comfy. No contest.

  20. Yes, another Holiday fan here... my vote goes to the cottage, slightly de-cluttered. The LA bedroom is a bit hotel chic for me.

  21. ohhh tough call !! neither are quite perfect - I think I like your bedroom better at your home :) le xox

  22. Much and all as I love the cottage look I have to be honest and say what I DON'T like! Those exposed beams=spiders ready to leap on me. Bed frame = chiropractic services.
Fireplace = me getting all horribly cranky trying to not get ash all over the room when cleaning it out.
Bamboo chinoisse style table = stubbed toes and shins being whacked. Other than that, I like it! LOL!

  23. We'll have to agree to disagree! I would definitely plump for Iris's bedroom and I would so want the fire side of the bed.
I can just imagine going of to sleep with the glow of embers keeping the room alight.
    I have a similar bedhead...and it's not a problem.

  24. The LA room is like a hotel - room very nice but not quite homely enough for me. Actually, I'm distracted by the colour of Iris's walls - is that Cord by F&B?! Which reminds me to thank you for my lovely test pots which arrived yesterday - I'm looking forward to experimenting with them!

  25. Hmm... both of these have their good qualities (the serene colours in Amanda's, that fab faux bamboo bench in Iris') and their bad (Amanda's looks too hotel-room and not personal enough, Iris' is a bit too cluttered for me).

Is it okay if I don't choose either? lol

I got my tester pots yesterday by the way! Thank you again, fab giveaway and can't wait to try them out :) xxx

  26. I love the cleanliness of the first, but you can't beat the coziness of the cottage :) XOL

  27. I would love a combination of the two. While that headboard looks great, it doesn't seem very comfy to lean back on. I do love that bench at the end of the bed!

  28. I totally see how the colour scheme of Amanda's bedroom woul appeal to you. I'm rewatching the movie because of you! Your last post made me think "where's the fridge in the cottage kitchen?" and I couldn't sleep before I found the part of the film that shows it! Now, I love the cottage bedroom as I'm not afraid of some kitch... But I draw the line at the standing plate on the dresser... Even for me, that's a tad bit too kitch!

  29. Sorry. I love the cottage bedroom. BUT, I know what you mean about the headboard (although I'm not much for reading in bed anyway). And I love those shades in Amanda's bedroom too. Now THAT would be nice.

  30. Love the cottage. I find the L.A. house very cold. I like small, warm, cosy, and a bit cluttered.

  31. Oh, this is a NO BRAINER..
THE ENGLISH COUNTRY BEDROOM is by far, to MOI, the BEST.
Not interested in the cold modern look at all. :)) (altho, I would take it if they gave it to me...lol

  32. As I am recovering from oral surgery this week, Jenny brought me The Holiday to watch again. I will be looking with fresh eyes.

I remember thinking how fun those automatic blinds would be great when you are getting over jet lag.

    Fondly,
    Glenda

  33. I do remember those automatic blinds! but nope, neither room is for me. Iris's is too cluttered, as you say, and Amanda's is too stark. Somewhere in the middle would be "just right."

  34. Okay, it is a toughy but I have to say from the first picture of Amanda's bedroom I am definitely a fan of the clean and clutter free space - It's a lot more relaxing for me I think and also I can't help but think of cleaning a bedroom with so many little things in and getting very frustrated whereas the American bedroom, although there's more to clean, there's less to move!

I surprised even myself with that choice....

  35. I love that movie, in fact I have the dvd specially because of the sets - love Cameron Dias house, I posted about it, too.
    Lovely post, congratulations.
    Warm hugs to you

  36. I am torn ..I do love the plush carpet in the American bedroom and the headboard/pillows add more warmth and comfort whereas I am a fireplace girl so really quite torn. I guess it would be easier to add pillows and a rug than to build a fireplace..therefore...

  37. You are too funny! I enjoy both bedrooms for different reasons. The American bedroom is pretty, crisp and clean feeling while the English bedroom is cozy but a bit to eclectic for me. If the walls where a lighter shade of gray or a more brown hued light tone I think I would like it for my home. I'd take the cozy one but with a few changes. First off, that red blanket would have to go! :) Great post.

    Blessings,
    Shanna
