Farrow and Ball's Lamp Room Gray (yes, Farrow and Ball, a British company choose to spell grey the American way...why?) is a seemingly simple colour at first glance.

Farrow and Ball describe it as 'a match to the original white which had dirtied down due to the trimming of the lamp wicks'.

Well, come on, Farrow and Ball, that's about as useful as a cat flap on a submarine, isn't it?

People often ask what the difference is between Farrow and Ball Cornforth White and Lamp Room Gray. You can see for yourself in the image below...
|
Farrow and Ball Lamp Room Gray number 88 |
..that Farrow and Ball has a slightly bluer cast. Cornforth White is more of a neutral, soft grey. Lamp Room Gray has a stronger presence. (Through the doors below, you can see a peek of Farrow and Ball Pigeon):

In the wrong position, under fluorescent lighting, for example, it has to be said that Lamp Room Gray (88) appears, dare I say it, dull. Just plain, old, boring grey... BUT, given the right treatment, the depth of pigment, as with any good paint, builds throughout a room to offer a grey that has a lot to give.

Probably the look Lamp Room Gray is most commonly used for is a masculine take on interiors. Here's a case in point...a lovely study:

In terms of changing colour, there is some variation with light. See how Lamp Room Gray takes on a creamy hue with bright skies...

And then reverts to a cooler grey in overcast skies...

Lamp Room Gray can vary in shade too. Warm sunshine brings a very slight green tinge...

And, conversely, lack of light can give a slightly taupier edge ...

If you're wanting to paint furniture, then expect a lightening, as the colour won't build up in the same way..

What marks Farrow and Ball Lamp Room Gray as special is more of a feeling than anything you can specifically put your finger on.
|
Farrow and Ball |
This is one of Farrow and Ball's colours that I wouldn't recommend getting copied. Use the real thing, or choose another colour. Otherwise you're at risk of ending up with a flat, boring looking room, rather than a subtle grey which makes you want to look...and then look again.

Grey is a colour that needs careful paint-choosing. More haste, less speed...That's why, if you're looking for a mid-toned grey, with a slight leaning to the cool, Farrow and Ball Lamp Room Gray is the one for me.

I love your colour studies! I'm torn about that grey (I'm keeping the English spelling). It's lighter than the previous one, so I should like it better, but the other one had more depth I think. I love how it looks on the front door, though!
ReplyDeleteWow! This one makes my heart go pitter-patter. I think this is my favorite so far! I'm loving your color (colour?) studies! :)
ReplyDeleteReally love your colour studies! I have used Lamp Room GrAy(!) on furniture but never considered it for walls but may have to change my mind now... also I really like the mad chandelier in the bedroom pic (about 5 photos down) do you have stockist details please?
ReplyDeleteMagali has just sent me to your post because I was just talking about Lamp Room Grey to her !!
ReplyDeleteAs you say, it is so different in so many lights but I love it because it's not a steely grey. I actually did mix my own because I used to do that sort of thing for a living and I needed raw umber with black and white to get to the right shade, raw umber being a greeny brown as opposed to a reddish brown.
Anyway, I'm glad Magali sent me here, great post !
Ooh yes, Lamp Room Gray is one of my favourite greys. I have previously used it in a teenage boy's bedroom design and it looked gorgeous - in every light. Loving these images showing the paint colour. Your paint case studies are very useful for us :)

Careprost plus 3 ml is an excellent solution for treating elevated ocular pressure. This medication comprises an ingredient called bimatoprost (3 ml) that is used to control excessive pressure. This increased pressure in the eyes causes glaucoma, a disease in which the optic nerve is injured and the pressure rises under abnormal conditions. So this effectively increases the fluid in the eye, causing the pressure to stabilise and then decrease. You can buy Careprost plus 3 ml eye drops online.
