Warning: A VERY grumpy post...with a Happy Ending.

We made the mistake of going camping at the weekend.
It was forecast rain.
Heavy rain.
And I still went.
{Why?}

One of life's perplexing questions.

It poured,
{and I mean poured
while we were putting the tent up
and when we were taking the tent down.
Picture, if you will, the scene above.
Only no umbrella.

I looked a bit like this, except I didn't pack a raincoat.
And my make-up slid off in a most unattractive fashion.

My face, in case you're wondering, was very much like this.

But words truly cannot tell
how blissfully awesome
it was to come home....
home to a warm, cosy haven
in our Master bedroom.

My own personal heaven.

PS. The winner of the Spode giveaway is Loo
I'll be sending an email any minute now...

  1. I love the first picture - so cute - and as long as it is not in real life, it is great, right? Poor you, cannot imagine how good it must have felt to be back home!

  12. I can completely relate to the power of camping to make you appreciate your normal life. We took our family camping a few Springs ago and both my husband and I woke up in the middle of the night so cold we started giggling uncontrollably through our chattering teeth, waking up half our kids in the process. It was a bonding moment, but not one we'd care to repeat. Since then we wait until the weather is warmer at night. Glad you lived to tell the tale :).

  13. Your children will remember it as the most perfect camping trip ever. I walked to work and home in that downpour. It turns out that I'd rather be wet than fighting with an umbrella. Of course I work in a cafe so wet waitress gets cake:)

  15. I love camping, then again, we have a fifth wheel, not a tent ;)

Just me, hubby, a crossword puzzle, a glass of wine.......bring on the rain!

  16. Camping in rain is hell. Camping in sun is heaven. We had our first camping trip of the year - in Shropshire - the sun shone! xxx

  17. What a bummer. We never get rain here in the summer so camping is always a safe bet plus we ditched the tent a long time ago and have a trailer which makes it a little drier. Bet your son had a good time though with all the puddles.

  18. Oh, darling Sarah!
I hope you don't regret it. Tom and I had the most awesome time with you all.

    Love sis. x

  20. We were very big on camping when we were younger and weathered a lot of storms. One thing I learned when camping in the rain...set up your tent at the TOP of the hill!!

  21. Hi Sarah, me again. I've just been doing a happy dance in the kitchen with a baffled Mr J and P looking on.

    Anyway, enough about me.

Blimey, we very nearly went camping last weekend but had to postpone it at the last minute. Poor you. Not very much fun when it rains a lot (I know, I've experienced it).

We're camping this weekend and next, so fingers crossed it doesn't rain.

    Bye bye Gorgeous. xxx

  28. Awww babe, no it wasn't a very nice weekend so sorry to hear about your wet camping experience!

(See now, this is why I don't camp - this here curly girl frizzes uncontrollably and I do not respond well to erm, cold. Or wet. Or dirt.)

Your bedroom, on the other hand, couldn't have been more welcoming I'm sure! Such coziness! Bliss...

Oh and congrats to Loo! Lucky lady! xxx

  29. Lucky Loo!!! No, there is no such thing as luck, I should say, Congratulations, Loo! What an amazing win this is for her, too.
I am so sorry you did not have a great weekend, but like you said coming home is always fabulous after an exercise such as that.

  30. Oh the great british weather strikes again - we went camping last summer and it rained the whole time - Luckily we were with friends who had a big tent so we spent time there chatting and then in the pub!

I am determined to go when its sunny!

  31. There is nothing glamourous about camping in the rain.

Thank you for following my blog.

  32. LOL and hugs. I once read that camping bonds families- in the same way disasters do):-

I still remember the time the rain came down so hard the tent collapsed with us all in it.

The heaviest rain I remember, though was driving to Bath- so 3 Cheers you made it home to write and remind me while when we go camping now, it's more like at the Hilton):- Dreadfully over-rated hotels IMHO.

Your bed does look like heaven.

  36. The first time I went camping with a family..four kids at that time..it snowed! We froze through the night and found the car battery dead in the morning. We packed up wet, cold tents and fled back to the warmth of the coast!

  37. We lit a fire in the fireplace last weekend! And funny, we were just saying how glad we had not chosen that weekend to go camping :) Hot chocolate in that adorable kitchen of yours? XOL

  39. Aww I completely sympathise. I'm like a cat when it comes to being out in the rain. Your bedroom IS the perfect respite from a rainy weekend, so cosy, inviting and beautiful!

Hope you're having a lovely week, darling.

  41. Sarah, what were you thinking! I think you're quite nuts to EVER consider camping in this country. I would'nt do it in Australia...my argument being that in Melbourne it was always too cold and in QLD there was too many snakes and spiders! My hubby did buy a tent once...I recommended that he get a 4 man tent (to include him and the 3 kids)...cause "I ain't goin with you!" We did use it once...in QLD on a property we were staying at...well it was so hot...by 5am when the sun came up we were like chooks in a rotisserie! Robx

  42. Hi Sarah, me again! Just to say that I've passed on an award to you, plse check out my latest post. I expect you've got millions of these or that you don't do awards. Anyway, it's there if you do. (we're camping tomorrow. I'm scared. Heavy rain forecast. Oh dear....).

  44. I'm so sorry I have to admit that I laughed at you reading that post, especially your make up!... Because today was a lovely morning so I put up a grey and white striped dress I bought with my mum years ago, feeling so pretty. But by noon it was pouring and as I went back to my car to pick up my lunchbox, a car drove past me and litteraly and SPLASH! my dress was spattered! You may have heard a noise in England: it was me swearing very loud!!!

  45. I love to camp, but certainly not when it rains! Seems to make everyone grumpy!

  46. lol! You poor girl! That doesn't sound like a good time at all! Did you all stay huddled up in your tent all weekend??? But what a beautifully cozy bedroom to collapse in when you got home. :) Hugs to you, Sarah! ♥

  49. Ah, home sweet home, for sure. And your cozy bedroom must have made it all the sweeter.

Our family has lived in a tent for a combined total of 4 years . . . way too many rainy or extra hot nights for me.

    Fondly,
    Glenda
