Any Modern Country Garden has to have climbing roses. It's a given, right? So, with that decision made, I'm often asked, which is the best climbing rose to choose?
Unless you have acres to devote to any rose that takes your fancy, a good idea is to only choose roses that perform beautifully. Look for profuse flowering over a long period, healthy, strong growth, and, of course, delicious perfume.
The climbing rose New Dawn (AGM) ticks all those boxes and more! It is reliable and healthy, with glossy, dark green foliage that lasts well into winter. New Dawn has fragrant blush pink flowers which appear freely from early summer to late autumn. Truly who could ask for more for their Modern Country Garden?
Last year, we planted the rose 'New Dawn' to grow up the front of our house. It's still in its baby-stages but I can't wait for it to reveal its full glory, as in the images below. Aren't they beautiful?
Modern Country Garden perfection!
Having given all that sensible advice, I have to admit, somewhat sheepishly, that I find it hard not to resist the call to squeeze in a few more roses in our own Modern Country garden.
Now, please 'fess up, I'm dying to know...
which is your favourite climbing rose?

It has been a tradition for many years now, that on Valentines Day, my husband and I give each other a shared gift of a plant or two of some kind. One year it was blue berry bushes another year it was a plum tree..etc.. This year we decided that we would research a nice climbing rose and plant two of them along the front fence. You have made the job so much easier with your recommendation of the New Dawn. I will be looking it up for our area here in the Pacific Northwest.
Thank you for this information. xo
Wow! That is a wonderful tradition! How amazing to watch the plants blossom as your love grows through the years. You've bought a big smile to my face!

Albertine is another beauty. There was one at my parents' house; Wish I could've dug it up when my mum moved, but it would've taken half the studio with it I think!!
Love Sherri Bs' Valentines Day idea. Might have to instigate that next year.
Hope you are all well?

I actually purchased new dawn last winter but it isn't doing very well where it is. I will definately be moving it tomorrow to a new spot! LOVED the pics.. thanks! take care, Maryann..
It's either New Dawn or Pierre de Ronsard. I can't wait to take care of my garden and plant roses... But this year, I'm focusing on the kitchen.
Hey Sarah! LOVE my New Dawn! I planted one last year on the arbor in my north garden. In one year it climbed up and over the top! I'm really looking forward seeing it bush out a bit this year and eventually cover the entire arbor. Of course...there's always always room for more roses in the garden...! lol Thanks for sharing such gorgeous photos!!

New Dawn is a fantastic rose. I had one growing on an arbor and it overtook it - it became known as the beast of the garden. She puts on a spectacular show around the third week in June and continues with smaller showings all through the season - I just adore her!!
I had a New Dawn when I lived in Norwich and it grew quite happily all over the (dark) north-facing wall of my house. But my all-time favourite is Albertine - I can't live without it! Here in Wales it has run riot but when a friend butchered it last spring to enable my house to have cavity wall insulation, it responded by growing back better than ever! Alchemist is also lovely, the way the flowers change colour as they grow through different stages, but you can't beat the fragrance of Albertine and it's the one I love to paint and use to make patterns too. :)
Hi Sarah, have you seen David Austin roses? I guarantee you will find it impossible to chose a favourite. I have quite a few.Stunning roses, fantastic perfume and very healthy. Also well worth a visit in June/ July to see them at there best. www. davidaustinroses.com best wishes Sharon.
Rambling and climbing roses are some of my very favorites ... especially the once-flowering American or French ramblers like 'Alberic Barbier', 'American Pillar', 'Leontine Gervais', or 'Glenn Dale'.
Funny to see that two other comments mention 'Albertine', another French rambler, as your Photo #6, the one with the stucco/stone wall and white door, is probably 'Albertine' and not New Dawn. The flower form and those tell-tale coral pink buds are a dead giveaway.
A wonderful site to visit to research roses is www.helpmefind.com/roses. Be prepared to waste a LOT of time there.
