Using Grey Rattan Kubu Chairs In Modern Country Style Gardens

When thinking about jubu chairs, how could I even think about not including styling grey rattan chairs in a Modern Country Garden? Kubu, rattan, grey rattan...whatever you want to call it...look completely at home outside...almost as though it's returning to its natural habitat!

So welcoming

It's worth noting that if you want to keep furniture outside on a permanent basis then you need to by man-made versions of rattan chairs. Kubu chairs will start to break down and rot after continued exposure to the elements.

Rattan chairs are on the hefty side so, if like me, you have a smallish garden, then consider using just a couple at either end of your table, for example, and using benches along the sides, that tuck in more easily.

The Grey Rattan Kubu Chair: Belgian Style Must-Haves

Grey rattan (or kubu) chairs have proved over many a year now that they are here to stay: a stalwart of the Belgian Style interior and exterior. I want to take an in-depth look at different ways to use rattan chairs in your home....

White and rattan:
Grey rattan kubu chairs: French Farmhouse Style!

Over the last decade, a design classic has emerged that uses rattan, rather than the previously adored wicker, to create a material that is more sturdy, stylish and, dare I say it, sex-aaay.

So what is the difference between kubu, rattan, wicker and cane? What's it all about? Let me explain...
Rattan is a climbing palm favoured for its long, pliable stems, which are perfect for creating chunky shapes with sinuous curves in that oh-so-fashionable shade of grey-greige.

Wicker and cane are the names of the process of weaving these long stems to create shapes but that process can also use stems from other plants, which will result in a different colour and finish. Kubu is a generic name for furniture made from rattan stems.

Softly-grey rattan is super-strong. I've had mine for maybe five years now, in full and constant use from the whole household, and it has zero signs of wear and tear.

The kubu rattan chairs shown throughout this post have super-powers to become a focal point in a huge range of looks but most notably Belgian Style Interiors and Gardens....

...where that perfect mix of natural tones of grey, brown and hints of creamy beige combines  with the simple lines of their shape, which is eye-catchingly curvy and endlessly elegant, allowing their owners to add textural interest to their schemes.

You'll find no ghastly hints of the orange tones that so often comes with cheap wicker chairs and it's worth pointing out that it's most definitely not worth buying cheaper copies that aren't made from rattan, hoping they'll fade to grey.

You see, even if they do eventually age in colour, they'll never have the same thickness of stem that kubu furniture does.

Rattan chairs and kubu furniture have been around for nearly a decade but still manage to look at the cutting edge of contemporary as well as combining a classic and cosy feel. Who could ask for more from one chair!?

The voluptuous lines of kubu rattan chairs pair well with limed, bare or painted furniture, which make them a great choice for Belgian Style Interiors: you'll get texture, colour and shape in one stunning item.

Did you know that archaeologists have found wicker items from the time of the ancient Egyptians? Or that wicker baskets were found at Pompeii! This is a look that just isn't going to go away! Timeless yet contemporary. One look at these gorgeous rattan chairs would have turned heads away from the face of Cleopatra herself!

The rattan chairs are comfortable to lounge in, though extended sitting probably needs a pillow or two when the chairs are new.

One of my favourite Belgian Style Living Rooms!

My favourite way to accessorise grey rattan chairs is to pair them with natural materials. Think of raw silks, a muted colour palette and soft woollen blankets: these will bring out the gentle hues of the rattan, as well as enhancing its beautiful texture, so essential in any Belgian Style Interiors.

Rattan kubu chairs

Equally at home inside or out, kubu grey rattan chairs are the height of relaxation to curl up in with a good book, enjoy a late supper around a table with friends, or perhaps making the most of the cheeky rays of sunshine we've been lucky enough to get in the last few days.

How To Create Belgian Style With Texture

How To Create Belgian Style Living Rooms
part trois
Today, my sweets we're looking at the
gorgeous
smorgasbord
that is texture.

Love the rough hewn wood transition to the next room:

Belgian Style interiors, I think we're all agreed, are utterly gorgeous, perfectly divine....but sometimes *cough* a little on the bland side (though obvs not the heavenly feast we have on show today...).

gorgeous rustic grey pots - Belgian style - original pin note: Het Juttersavontuur #fireplace #belgian:

But but BUT there's so much inspiration to be had nevertheless, which is why, when perusing these pulchritudinous (thank you, thesaurus) Belgian Style living rooms, we could be asking ourselves:

How can we get Belgian Style to work for us in our own homes?

Linen, Wood, texture & a lovely modern reading light.:

And that's where those Belgian Style interiors that really stand out above the rest come in. These living rooms I'm sharing today play around delightfully with that often mistakenly bypassed tool:

texture

We need to mix the rough antiques with the fancy stuff to give a relaxed but luxury home look. Like this stool for example:

What these images lack in pops of colour, they make up for in absolute spades by the addition of a huge range of different tactile materials.

In the master bath, a fancy, highly carved wood chair, sits next to an unexpected contemporary canvas. Belgian design is all about the mood, the quiet colors, the sparseness of the interiors against the vastness of the architecture, and the textures – the rough, rustic touches mixed with smooth, shiny crystals and glass.:

I'm talking about the roughly carved wood, cool-under-the-feet stone flags, the gentle weave of the fabrics, the dull shine of ironwork, soft linens...yes, even twiggy branches....

Art De Vivre by Francine Gardner: Modern Country by Axel Vervoordt:

All these combine to bring a visual delight that, whilst, true, it doesn't just pop out at you like a shot of fluorescent pink might, Belgian Style interiors are all the more precious for their subtlety.

Belgian Style living rooms master the art of the understated, and the key to making sure that this look keeps you on your toes aesthetically is that bombardment of a feast of different textures.

And who in their right mind would say no to a feast?!
