Modern Country Style Boys' Bedroom Reveal And Resource List

The reveal of our Modern Country Style boys' bedroom....
is here!!

Here's what we started with...

Possibly the world's most epically colourful room...

Green, yellow, orange and white.
Not a touch of Modern Country Style in sight.
{A li'l bonus poem thrown in for free ;-) )

We started off by getting the bones of the room right.
Removing the dated glass above the door.

Replacing the door itself with a stripped pine beauty sourced from Oxford University made the most enormous difference. We've done this throughout the whole house and it was one of the best investments we made, and one I recommend to clients who live in period houses but have inherited ugly replacement doors. You'll be amazed by the difference.

We had the floorboards stripped, sanded, stained and varnished to withstand all that little boys can throw at it!! The built-in wardrobe doors were waxed, and the original fixing giving a good rub-down.

The bespoke shelves were put in by the previous owners and were way to good to rip out so we incorporated them into the room by painting the framework Dulux White gloss  (my go-to white). We left the inners as bare wood because I want to minimise chipping in the future.

The walls were painted in Farrow and Ball's Pale Powder (case study here) the softest pale duck egg you can imagine (click through for the full Colour Case Study) with the ceiling in Dulux White.

The large check duvet is from The White Company.

You can find full tutorial to make your own Patchwork Memory Quilt here...

The red gingham curtains and lampshade are from The White Company. {These have been discontinued.}

Our boys loved being here.

Loved? Past tense?
{Gasp}
Can that be right?!

Get The Look: Red and Blue Colour Scheme In Your Child's Bedroom

Last time, we talked about children's bedrooms with a blue and red colour scheme. Shall we take a look in a little more detail at how to pull this look together for your own little poppets, by taking a step by step approach to this gorgeous children's bedroom in Bazeley House?

In order to allow the room to grow with the child, I'd advise choosing a fairly neutral background. We chose to use Farrow and Ball Pale Powder (more on that shortly!), a perfect, chalkily soft Robin's Egg shade, but for the look featured here, try Farrow and Ball Lime White.

Once the bare bones are established, it's time to build layers of your dominant colour, in Bazeley House, they've chosen blue, so we see that bright seaside blue in the duvets, throws, the clock, artwork and accessories.

From there, it's time for step 3: add smaller splashes of your secondary colour, red.

Finish with a final flourish of quirky extras to add your own special twist that's unique to you and your children. Time to arrange your kiddiewinks' favourite toys, or first pair of shoes....have fun and don't forget to let me know how you get on!

Blue and Red Colour Schemes In Children's Bedrooms

My all-time favourite colour scheme in children's bedrooms is red and blue. It has Modern Country Boys Bedroom written all over it.

It's the colour scheme I've gone for in our boys' bedroom and I'm loving it. But before we get to the final reveal, let's take a look at some fantabuous inspiration.

{Tissues for mopping up drool will be supplied.}

Some of these have their emphasis very firmly on red, with snippets o' blue...

...and others reverse the trend and side with the blue and introduce touches of red...

Some are neutral with accents of red and blue. Greedy?!

Some veer deliciously to the Country edge of Modern Country...

While others teeter on the brink of Modern....

Some are for multiple children...

...whilsy others are for singletons...

Do it any which way you like: in my book of Modern Country, design a boy's bedroom around a red and blue colour scheme and you can't go far wrong!

Gorgeous Modern Country Style bedroom

I love this Modern Country Style bedroom. It would be perfect for growing boys, too, or to double up as a guest room, don't you think?

Modern Country loves...Union Jack rugs

Sometimes, something so deliciously Modern Country comes along that I simply can't wait to share it with you!

Such a momentous occasion has arisen, my friends.
I ordered this Union Jack rug from Cox and Cox
for the boys bedroom a while back and I am still smitten.

You know how some mail order buys
completely surpass your expectations?
This is one of them.

The picture doesn't do the rug justice.
The colours are much darker and richer and infinitely more Modern Country. The 100% wool tufts feel soft and reassuringly good quality under bare little feet (and bigger mummy feet too!).

The backing is edged beautifully. I love it when gorgeous details are placed where they're not even meant to be seen...you know they're there for just the sheer pleasure of looking good.

If you've been searching for a thoroughly eye-catching
Union Jack rug,
let your search stop here.
Jackpot.

{Edited note: the rug was from Cox and Cox who have stopped this particular rug but still stock the star version, or you can buy a very similar version here}

Union Jack-inspired boys bedroom!

This was the bedroom that got me thinking, I LOVE bedrooms inspired by the colours of the Union Jack flag...and, best of all, incorporating the flag itself....

More to follow very soon!

For a similar wall colour, try Farrow and Ball Old White...

Are Boys Bedrooms Too Pretty?

The problem I find with many beautifully designed boys bedrooms is that they look, simply put, too pretty. I often help my clients to work through this very issue. You should be looking to strike the balance so that everyone is thrilled with the result!

This room is gorgeous but hanging hearts on the chest of drawers? Beading on the blinds? Really?!!
